Only a few days remained until Christmas Eve, but the frost in the forest grew stronger with each passing day 🥶. A thick blanket of snow covered every tree, and the meadow below the forest looked like a giant sugar-coated cake 🎂. While the people in the village were busy cleaning and baking fragrant gingerbread cookies, Carl the forest keeper thought of his woodland friends from early morning. He knew very well that in winter, with so much snow around, it was very difficult for animals to find food 🌲. He put on his warm green coat, placed a dark green hat on his head, slipped into his high boots with cozy fur, and knew the right time had come to prepare a big pre-Christmas surprise for the forest animals 🎅.
Carl loaded a massive pile of fragrant dry hay onto his large wooden sleigh, which he had dried himself during the summer 🌾. He added a full sack of crunchy carrots, sweet red apples, and a few large ears of corn 🌽🍎. Harnessing himself to the straps, he slowly pulled the sleigh uphill, deep into the snowy trees where he had built an animal feeder years ago. The snow crunched pleasantly under his feet, and the sharp frost painted his cheeks red ☺️.
When he arrived at the large wooden feeder in the clearing, he got straight to work 🛠️. He filled the manger with the soft, fragrant hay that smelled of summer sun and blooming flowers. Around the feeder, he placed the corn, apples, and carrots on the clean snow for the bunnies 🐇. On the low branches of the pine trees, he hung suet balls with seeds for the hungry titmice 🐦. “There you go, my forest friends, may you have a bountiful and peaceful holiday ahead, I will surely stop by between the holidays too,” Carl whispered, patting the wood of the feeder, and started his journey back home 🌲.
Suddenly, however, the sky turned completely dark within minutes. A terrible, wild blizzard broke out 🌪️❄️. Strong winds blew from all directions, snowflakes stung his face, and visibility dropped to almost zero. Carl, even though he knew the forest like the back of his hand, suddenly lost his orientation. All the paths were ruggedly buried in snow, and the whiteout swallowed him completely 🌲. “Oh no, in a storm like this, I have no idea which way is north,” Carl thought fearfully, huddling under a large spruce tree to seek shelter from the freezing wind. He pondered anxiously: “How will I ever get home? This has never happened to me before.”
Meanwhile, back at the feeder, miracles began to happen ✨. The scent of fresh hay attracted a majestic stag with huge antlers, two timid deer, wild boars who loved the smell of corn, and little rabbits 🐗🦌. But wild animals have incredible senses. One young buck, however, was terrified of the stag, and even though he was very hungry, he chose to stay far away from the feeder. But he caught the scent of hay somewhere else. As Carl had walked toward the feeder with his full sleigh, a few stalks of hay had dropped to the ground every now and then.
And so, the young buck set off following this fragrant trail, eating the snow and hay along the way 😋. As this little buck trod along the path of dropped hay, he stamped a clear trail into the deep snow 🐾. Carl was already losing hope from the biting cold when he suddenly heard branches snapping through the roar of the blizzard. A deer dashed out from under the trees, looked at him with her big brown eyes, and hopped back onto the freshly trodden path, where she picked up a few remaining stalks of hay left behind by the buck 🦌.
In that moment, Carl understood that he had been losing hay from his sleigh, and if he followed the deer’s path, he would make it all the way home! With his remaining strength, he set off down the trail where first the young buck and then the deer had walked. The trail safely led him out of the deep forest and straight to the gate of his cottage 🏡. When Carl, tired but happy, closed the gate leading from his garden to the meadow, he turned around one last time. At the edge of the forest stood the very same deer, chewing on her last stalk of hay tastes 🥰.
Carl walked into his warm cottage and drank hot tea with honey to warm himself back up ☕. Once he felt warm, he went right back outside with a basket full of delicious apples and a sack of hay. He set up these treats just a little way behind his gate so that the deer and the young buck could have their snacks within reach without having to fear the heavy stag 🍎🌾. It was his way of thanking them for helping him find his way safely home.
When Carl returned inside to the warmth, he looked out the window toward the snowy forest. There, at the edge of the meadow, he saw the deer and the young buck happily munching on the treats together. It warmed his heart deeply, and he thought with a smile: “Maybe in the spring, they will bring a little fawn to show me.” 🥰🎄
