❄️ Winter nights in the small village were quiet and magical. On the edge of the village lived Mr. Miller, and a thick, dense spruce tree grew in his yard. It was beautiful and grand, with dark needles, and long brown spruce cones grew on the tips of its branches. High up in the crown of this spruce, a little red squirrel named Ginger had her cozy home inside a tree hollow. Children from the nearby houses often watched her leaping happily from branch to branch during the day, searching for food. Every now and then, a pile of snow would fall on her from the swaying branches she jumped on.
But tonight, instead of enjoying a sweet sleep in her nest made of moss and leaves, Ginger was miserably covering her eyes with her paws 😩. 💡 She couldn’t sleep at all. Mr. Miller had decided to turn his big spruce into the brightest Christmas tree on the entire street. He wrapped a massive string of colorful electric lights around the trunk and the branches. When he turned them on in the evening, the tree lit up beautifully, and all the villagers came to admire how gorgeous it looked.
The problem was that two of the brightest blue and red bulbs blinked right into the entrance of Ginger’s home. The poor squirrel spent the whole night tossing and turning, and the glaring light wouldn’t let her close her eyes for even a single second 😡.
🤫 “Enough! It’s impossible to sleep like this!” an angry Ginger thought in the early morning hours, completely scholastic and exhausted. During the day, she could only doze off fitfully. She didn’t even have the energy to hop along the branches and look for the delicious treats she had hidden away in autumn. She kept thinking about what she could do to get a comfortable night’s sleep the following night. She decided to investigate what had been flashing into her little home all night long.
She climbed out onto the tree trunk and saw cables and bulbs absolutely everywhere. She didn’t like it one bit. She climbed higher up the trunk to check if someone had played this trick only around her home, but indeed they hadn’t—the cables with bulbs covered the entire spruce. She leaped from branch to branch and headed, exhausted, back into her hollow. She had absolutely no idea that during her last jump, she had swung the branches so hard that the lights disconnected at one of the cable joints.
That evening, when the whole spruce was supposed to light up, a proud Mr. Miller stood in the yard to enjoy his glowing tree. But then, something strange happened. The lights didn’t turn on or blink at all. Neighbor Miller stood under the tree, scratching his head in confusion, looking at the dark string of lights. Emma, a little girl who lived next door, was playing in the snow in her yard and ran over to the fence. 🪟
“Mr. Miller, look up there!” Emma called out, pointing to a branch. Ginger had just peeked out of her hollow—tired, but with a happy look on her face because nothing was flashing into her home anymore. The neighbor then noticed the disconnected cables on the branches right next to her hollow. “Oh,” Mr. Miller sighed, rubbing his chin. “These lights brought me a Christmas mood, but I completely ruined your sleep, didn’t I, little one?”
🐿️ Mr. Miller was a good man at heart and immediately changed his mind. He grabbed a ladder and moved the cable with the lights three branches lower, so they wouldn’t shine into Ginger the squirrel’s home. He left a quiet, pleasant shadow zone all around Ginger’s hollow. When he climbed down the ladder, he went to plug the lights back into the electricity. The lights turned on once more. The spruce shone brightly down the entire street, but Ginger’s hollow remained in a cozy, peaceful shade.
🌬️ The little squirrel settled comfortably on the edge of her hollow, munching on a nut and watching the colorful wonderland below her. Mr. Miller waved to her from down below. Ginger made a cheerful flick of her tail, as if to say thank you. The whole neighborhood now glowed with the most beautiful Christmas lights. But at Christmas, we must never forget about even our smallest forest friends ❤️✨.
